A wild symbol substitutes for regular symbols to complete a payline. A sticky wild does the same, then stays on its reel position for the next spin instead of disappearing with the rest of the grid. It keeps that position until the feature that created it ends: the last free spin, the last respin, or in a few games the next losing spin.
Three rules decide how strong a given sticky wild is, and we list all three on every game page in our lobby. First, which reels it can land on. Dead or Alive 2 allows wilds on all five reels, while Starburst restricts its held wilds to reels two, three and four. Second, whether it carries a multiplier. In The Dog House every sticky wild shows a 2x or 3x badge, and the multipliers add together when two wilds sit on one payline. Third, whether a new wild landing on an occupied spot upgrades the old one, as it does in the Old Saloon and High Noon Saloon rounds of Dead or Alive 2.
The symbol has a few other names. Some paytables call it a locked wild, a frozen wild or a held wild. Pragmatic Play writes that wilds remain on the reels for the duration of the feature. The behaviour is the same: once it lands, it is yours until the round closes.
A slot's return to player is a long-run average, and the feature decides where that average is stored. In Dead or Alive 2 the base game on nine lines pays little; the bulk of the 96.8% sits inside the free spins. A player who never triggers the round sees a far lower return than the label, while a player who fills five reels with wilds sees a far higher one. That spread is what "high volatility" means in practice, and it is the reason we show the RTP version of every game in the info panel rather than only the studio default.
Sticky wilds show up in three parts of a slot, and we sort our lobby by that placement, because it tells you the game's volatility before you read a single paytable number.
The largest shelf. Three scatters trigger a set of free spins, usually between eight and twelve, and every wild that lands during them locks. Dead or Alive (NetEnt, 2009) set the template: 12 free spins on nine paylines, sticky wilds, and every win doubled. Dead or Alive 2 kept the 12 spins and added three rounds to choose from. The Dog House awards nine, fifteen or twenty-seven spins for three, four or five scatters, with a multiplier on every wild. Wild West Gold gives eight spins on a five-by-four grid with 2x, 3x and 5x wilds, and Vikings Go Berzerk turns any Viking that wins a fight during free spins into a sticky wild for the rest of the round.
Base-game respins hold the wild for one or two extra spins rather than a full round. Starburst is the best-known case: a wild on reels two to four expands to cover the reel, then the other reels respin, up to three times in a row. Joker Pro from the same studio locks a Joker on reels two to four and turns reels one and five fully wild for the respin. These games hit often and pay small, so we file them under low volatility for players who want longer sessions from the same balance.
Newer games treat the sticky wild as one option among several. In Wanted Dead or a Wild the Dead Man's Hand bonus is the sticky wild round, sitting alongside Duel at Dawn and The Great Train Robbery. The Dog House Megaways asks you to pick between Sticky Wilds Free Spins and Raining Wilds Free Spins before the round starts. Both games carry a feature buy button at StickyWilds where local rules allow it.
Six games show the range of the feature, from the pure NetEnt version to the multiplier-heavy modern take. RTP figures are the studio defaults; the info panel inside each game shows the version running at StickyWilds.
Slot | Studio | Grid | Sticky wild round | RTP (default) |
Dead or Alive 2 | NetEnt | 5x3, 9 lines | All three free spin rounds | 96.8% |
The Dog House | Pragmatic Play | 5x3, 20 lines | Free spins, 2x or 3x wilds | 96.51% |
Wild West Gold | Pragmatic Play | 5x4, 40 lines | Free spins, 2x, 3x or 5x wilds | 96.51% |
Wanted Dead or a Wild | Hacksaw Gaming | 5x5, 15 lines | Dead Man's Hand bonus | 96.38% |
Vikings Go Berzerk | Yggdrasil | 5x4, 25 lines | Free spins, after a won fight | 96.1% |
Sticky Bandits | Quickspin | 5 reels, 30 lines | Free spins, 2x2 Massive Wilds | 96.58% |
The benchmark, and the most played sticky wild game at StickyWilds. Three scatters open a choice of Train Heist, Old Saloon or High Noon Saloon. Each gives 12 free spins on nine lines, and each handles the wild differently. In Train Heist every wild adds one extra spin and raises a shared multiplier by 1x. In Old Saloon a second wild landing on an occupied position turns that wild into a 2x wild. High Noon Saloon takes the same upgrade one step further to 3x. Land a wild on every reel in any round and the game adds five more spins. The published max win is 111,111x the bet.
Pragmatic Play's take adds a multiplier to every sticky wild. During the free spins, 2x and 3x wilds lock in place and their values add up along a line, so two 3x wilds on one payline pay six times the normal amount. The maximum is 6,750x the bet. The Dog House Megaways from 2020 raises the ceiling to 12,305x and lets you choose sticky wilds or raining wilds before the round begins.
Same studio, bigger grid. Five reels, four rows, 40 lines and eight free spins in which every wild sticks and carries 2x, 3x or 5x. Multipliers on the same line add, so a line of 5x wilds is the route to the 10,000x cap. Extra scatters during the round add spins, which is the main way a session stretches beyond the starting eight.
Hacksaw Gaming's Wild West title uses a five-by-five grid with 15 lines and three bonus games. Dead Man's Hand is the sticky wild round: wilds lock for the full set of spins, and the round is built around collecting as many of them as possible before the spins run out. Duel at Dawn and The Great Train Robbery follow different rules, so a player who wants the sticky wild version has to trigger, or buy, that one. Max win is 12,500x.
Yggdrasil ties the sticky wild to a fight. During free spins each Viking symbol that lands battles a Siren, and a Viking that wins becomes a sticky wild for the rest of the round. A Viking in Berzerk mode wins every fight, so filling a rage meter before the feature matters as much as the trigger itself. The base game runs 25 lines on a five-by-four grid.
Quickspin's Wild West entry uses two-by-two Massive Wild bandits. Trigger the bonus and the bandits already on screen stay for seven free spins, with any new one locking as it arrives. Because each wild covers four positions, two bandits can turn a 30-line game into a run of full-screen wins. Sticky Bandits: Wild Return (2019) and Sticky Bandits 3: Most Wanted (2021) are in the lobby as well.
The sticky wild has cousins, and the StickyWilds lobby carries them on the same shelf. A locked coin in a Hold and Win round and a held Joker in a respin follow the one rule that matters: the symbol stays where it landed until the feature ends. Learning one of them teaches the others.
Game | Studio | What locks | When it locks |
Sticky Wild: Farm 51 | NetGame | Wild symbols | Free spins |
Starburst | NetEnt | Expanded wild reel | Up to three respins |
Sticky Coin: Hold the Spin | Gamzix | Coin symbols | Hold the Spin respins |
Sunny Coin 10000: Hold The Spin | Gamzix | Coin symbols | Hold the Spin respins |
3 Pyramids of Gold: Hold and Win | 3 Oaks | Coin symbols | Hold and Win respins |
5 Relics of Power: Hold and Win | 3 Oaks | Coin symbols | Hold and Win respins |
Coin Strike: Hold and Win | Playson | Coin symbols | Hold and Win respins |
Royal Joker: Hold and Win | Playson | Coin symbols | Hold and Win respins |
Sticky Wild: Farm 51 says its mechanic in the title: wilds lock for the free spins, in the same way NetEnt's saloon rounds work. The Hold and Win and Hold the Spin titles from 3 Oaks, Playson and Gamzix lock coins rather than wilds. Six or more coins start a set of three respins, each new coin locks and resets the count, and the round pays the sum of every locked coin when the respins run out. The lock is identical; only the symbol and the payout rule differ. Players who like Dead or Alive 2 usually settle into Coin Strike or 3 Pyramids of Gold within a session, and the reverse is just as common.
Wild behaviour is the fastest way to tell two slots apart, and our game filters use it. The table sets sticky wilds beside the alternatives you will meet at StickyWilds, with one title for each.
Wild type | What it does | How long it lasts | Example |
Sticky wild | Locks on its position | Until the feature ends | Dead or Alive 2 (NetEnt) |
Walking wild | Moves one reel per spin, respinning as it goes | Until it walks off the grid | Wild Toro (ELK Studios) |
Expanding wild | Grows to fill the whole reel | One spin, or one respin | Starburst (NetEnt) |
Stacked wild | Lands as a block of two or more wilds on one reel | One spin | Wolf Gold, reels two to four (Pragmatic Play) |
Multiplier wild | Multiplies any win it joins | One spin, unless also sticky | Wild West Gold (Pragmatic Play) |
Random wild | Added to the grid by a chance event | One spin | Wild Wild West: The Great Train Heist (NetEnt) |
The categories overlap. Wild West Gold's wilds are sticky and multiplied at once. Starburst's are expanding and held. When a paytable lists two wild traits, the second one usually only applies inside the bonus, so check which spin type you are on.
Feature buy versions let you pay a fixed price for the free spins instead of waiting for scatters. Dead or Alive 2 Feature Buy (NetEnt, 2020) opens the same three saloon rounds. The Dog House Megaways lists its free spins buy at 100x the bet. Wanted Dead or a Wild sells each of its three bonus games separately, so Dead Man's Hand can be bought on its own.
The price tells you something about the round. A buy at 100x means the studio expects the average round to return close to that figure, minus the house edge. Sticky wild rounds are among the most variable to buy: a round with no wilds at all is common and pays a fraction of the price, while a round with wilds on every reel pays many times over. A balance that covers a handful of purchases will go through a losing streak that a balance covering thirty or more will ride out, so we recommend sizing your buys against your balance, not against the max win.
Some markets do not permit feature buy, and the button is hidden at StickyWilds for players there. The scatter route is always available, and demo play lets you test both before you stake real money.
Every promotion at StickyWilds comes with its terms on the same page as the offer, and the two numbers that matter are the wagering requirement and the game weighting. Wagering is how many times the bonus, or the bonus plus deposit, must be staked before a withdrawal. Weighting is how much of each stake counts: slots normally count in full, while table games count for a fraction or not at all.
Sticky wild slots need one extra check. A high-volatility game can swing a bonus balance far up or far down inside a single free spin round, and some offers cap the stake per spin while a bonus is active. The cap and the list of games that count are printed in the offer terms. Read both before you open Dead or Alive 2 with bonus funds. Free spins awarded as a promotion are tied to a named game and a fixed stake, and winnings from them carry the same wagering as the offer they came with. The current offers are listed on the promotions page.
StickyWilds accounts are held in EUR. You can deposit with Visa, Mastercard, Skrill, Neteller, Trustly and paysafecard from the cashier, and the amount is credited as soon as the payment provider confirms it. Withdrawals go back to the method you deposited with wherever that method supports payouts; paysafecard does not, so a bank or e-wallet is used instead.
E-wallets are the quickest route out. Skrill and Neteller withdrawals are released once our checks are done, and card and bank transfers then depend on the receiving bank's own processing. Before a first withdrawal we verify identity and address, which is standard for a licensed casino and protects the account holder. Uploading a clear document at sign-up avoids a delay at the moment you want to cash out.
StickyWilds runs in the phone browser; there is no app to download, and the same login, balance and bonus progress carry over from desktop. The games listed above are built in HTML5, so Dead or Alive 2 and The Dog House run in portrait with the paytable and RTP panel one tap away.
Two things change on a small screen. Feature buy and bet size controls sit behind a menu icon rather than beside the reels, so check the stake before you spin. Autoplay limits, loss limits and session timers are in the same menu, and we suggest setting them before a free spin round rather than during one.
StickyWilds is for adults of legal gambling age. Every account has deposit limits, loss limits, session reminders, a time-out and self-exclusion available from the account settings, and a lower limit applies at once while a higher one takes effect after a cooling-off period. Sticky wild slots in particular reward patience and punish thin bankrolls, so set a deposit limit before your first session rather than after a losing one.
If gambling stops feeling like entertainment, support is available from Gamblers Anonymous (https://www.gamblersanonymous.org), and our support team can apply a self-exclusion on request without further questions.
They are stronger per symbol, because one landing helps every later spin in the round. Whether the game is better depends on volatility. A sticky wild slot pays less often and more in bursts than a game with plain wilds, so it suits a player with a bankroll sized for long dry spells.
No. The lock lasts for the feature that created it. When the last free spin or respin finishes, the grid resets and the wilds are gone. The exception is a retrigger inside the same round, which keeps the existing wilds and adds spins.
Yes. Every game in the lobby opens in demo mode without an account. Demo play uses the same RTP version as real play at StickyWilds, so it is a fair way to see the trigger rate and what a typical empty round looks like.
Accounts are in EUR. Deposits work with Visa, Mastercard, Skrill, Neteller, Trustly and paysafecard; withdrawals go to cards, e-wallets or bank transfer after verification.
Yes. Studios use different labels for the same behaviour. Locked, frozen, held and sticky all describe a wild that keeps its position for further spins. The only meaningful difference is how long it holds, which the paytable states.
No. RTP is fixed by the studio and by the version the casino runs. Sticky wilds change the distribution of that return, pushing more of it into the bonus round and less into the base game.
Open the demo of Dead or Alive 2 or The Dog House, watch where the wilds lock, then set a deposit limit and play for real. StickyWilds adds new sticky wild titles to the lobby as studios release them.
